How we handle your data at JAPANODE.
Last updated: September 12, 2026
Information We Collect
We collect limited information to improve your experience on JAPANODE. This includes:
- Analytics data: Pages visited, time spent on site, referring URLs, device type, browser type, and general geographic location (country/region level).
- Cookies: Small files stored on your device to support analytics and site functionality.
- Newsletter data: Your email address, consent and confirmation status, and unsubscribe status when you choose to join our email list.
We do not collect personally identifiable information unless you voluntarily provide it, such as by subscribing to the newsletter or contacting us.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors interact with our site. GA4 collects data such as:
- Pages and screens viewed
- Session duration and engagement metrics
- General location data (country and city level)
- Device and browser information
- Traffic sources and referral paths
Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish users and sessions. We generally review this information in aggregate, while Google processes the underlying data under its own policies. For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.
Newsletter and Email Communications
When you submit the newsletter form, you request the free Japan Trip Timeline and consent to receive occasional JAPANODE emails about Japan travel planning, booking windows, and travel updates. Some emails may contain affiliate links. Subscription is optional, and you can withdraw your consent at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us.
We use Kit, Inc. ("Kit," formerly ConvertKit) to collect subscriptions, send confirmation and newsletter emails, manage unsubscribes, and help prevent abuse. The signup form sends your information directly to Kit; JAPANODE does not store the submitted email address on its own website server. Kit may process technical information such as timestamps, IP addresses, delivery events, and confirmation activity as needed to provide and secure the service.
Kit is based in the United States and may process subscriber data in the United States and other countries. Its processing of newsletter subscriber data is governed by its Data Processing Addendum and Privacy Policy. We do not sell or rent our subscriber list.
We use a confirmation email to verify subscriptions. Emails sent through Kit may use tracked links and an invisible image to record deliveries, opens, and clicks. We use these measurements to assess email performance and improve our content; they can be affected by email-provider privacy and security features.
Cookies
JAPANODE uses cookies primarily for analytics purposes. These cookies help us understand site usage patterns and improve our content.
You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. You can also manage or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time.
Free Calculator Tools
JAPANODE offers free interactive calculator tools (such as the Visa Calculator and JR Pass Calculator). These tools are designed with your privacy in mind:
- Client-side processing: All calculations run entirely in your browser. No personal data, route selections, or calculation results are transmitted to our servers.
- No data storage: We do not store any information you enter into our calculator tools. When you close or refresh the page, all inputs are cleared.
- Analytics events: We may collect aggregate, anonymized analytics events (such as "calculator page viewed") to understand tool usage patterns. These events contain no personally identifiable information and no details about your specific inputs or results.
Third-Party Services
We partner with affiliate networks to recommend products and services relevant to Japan travel. These include:
- Amazon Associates: We are a participant in the Amazon Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.
- Travelpayouts: We partner with Travelpayouts to offer travel-related product recommendations, including flights, hotels, and tours.
These third-party services may use their own cookies and tracking technologies. We encourage you to review their respective privacy policies for more details.
Affiliate Disclosure
Some links on this site are affiliate links. This means we may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through these links, at no extra cost to you. This helps support the site and allows us to continue creating free, high-quality Japan travel content.
Data Retention
Analytics data collected through Google Analytics is retained according to our GA4 settings and Google's data retention policies. Newsletter data is retained by Kit while you are subscribed and afterward only as reasonably necessary to honor opt-out requests, maintain consent records, meet legal obligations, and protect the service. You may request deletion by contacting us.

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your data:
- Right of access: Request information about what data we hold about you.
- Right to deletion: Request deletion of any personal data we may hold.
- Right to correction: Ask us to correct inaccurate personal data.
