What happens if I overstay my visa in Japan?
Overstaying in Japan is a serious offense under immigration law. Consequences include detention at an immigration facility, forced deportation, fines, and a re-entry ban typically lasting 5 to 10 years. If you realize you've overstayed, contact your nearest immigration office or embassy immediately.
How does Japan count visa days? Is the arrival day “day 1” or “day 0”?

Japan uses the “initial day exclusion” principle (初日不算入) based on Article 140 of the Japanese Civil Code. Your day of arrival is not counted as part of the stay period — counting begins the following day.

Example: If you have a 90-day visa-free stay and arrive on May 1, that day is not counted. Counting starts from May 2, so your last permitted day in Japan is July 30 (the 90th day from May 2).

The time of arrival does not matter — whether you land at 6 AM or 11 PM, the entire arrival day is excluded. Similarly, your last day is valid until midnight (Article 141, Civil Code). This calculator follows the same method.

Can I extend my visa-free stay in Japan?
Only certain nationalities covered by bilateral arrangements allowing stays of up to six months may apply to extend beyond 90 days after entry. MOFA currently names Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Do not assume an extension is available; confirm with MOFA and Immigration Services before travel.
