Japan Travel Insurance for US Residents: Plans & Costs

For a US resident with fixed Japan dates and non-refundable bookings, start with one Faye quote and compare it with US trip-insurance plans on VisitorsCoverage. Keep the same traveler, state, dates and trip cost in both searches. Choose on the issued benefits and exclusions, not the cheapest number alone.

This guide is for US residents visiting Japan. If you live elsewhere, use our general Japan travel insurance comparison. If you have already left home, go to the after-departure guide before requesting a new policy.

One fixed-trip quote: Faye

Faye is a starting point when you want to inspect one provider's trip-protection quote. Its official FAQ confirms that it sells to US residents in all states, with exclusions for the listed US territories, and requires purchase before departure. Benefits depend on the state and issued plan. An American passport by itself does not establish eligibility.

Compare several plans: VisitorsCoverage

VisitorsCoverage is a marketplace. Its product overview distinguishes US-resident trip insurance from other travel-medical products. For a US-to-Japan holiday with prepaid costs, begin with the trip-insurance comparison and select Japan as the destination.

Use the marketplace to compare alternatives to a single-provider quote. The carrier named on the plan issues the insurance: do not assume every result has identical medical limits, cancellation reasons, age rules or claims procedures.

Check your existing US cover first

Ask your health insurer for the actual overseas emergency benefits, not just whether the plan has an international assistance number. A contact service and payment of treatment costs are different things. Also ask about medical evacuation, deductibles, reimbursement requirements and the period abroad that the plan permits.

Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, apart from limited exceptions. Medicare also notes that some Medigap policies may provide foreign emergency coverage. Check the particular plan you hold rather than treating either statement as a universal answer for every retiree.

Your travel card may cover some losses, but inspect each benefit separately. Our credit-card insurance audit checks medical care, evacuation, activation rules, activities and trip length. If existing benefits fully cover the risks you intend to insure, there may be no reason to duplicate them.

Write down the remaining gap before comparing a new policy. For example, the missing benefit might be emergency medical treatment rather than cancellation, or it might be protection for a large non-refundable booking. These lead to different comparisons.

What to enter for an accurate Japan quote

Prepare the details once and reuse them. Changing the trip cost or departure date between providers can make an apparent bargain meaningless.

InputUse this
ResidenceYour actual US state, as defined by the provider
TravelersEach traveler's age or date of birth requested by the quote
Travel datesDeparture through return, including transit days
DestinationsJapan and any other stops on the insured trip
Trip costEligible prepaid, non-refundable costs you want to insure
Initial payment dateThe actual first trip payment or deposit date
Optional benefitsThe same cancellation or activity upgrades in each comparison

Work out the prepaid money you could lose

Make a short booking list: flights, accommodation, tours and other prepaid reservations. Beside each item, record what the supplier would refund and on what date the cancellation penalty changes. Do not treat the whole holiday spending budget as an insured loss without checking the plan's definition of trip cost.

As an illustration, imagine $2,000 of flights and a $600 accommodation deposit are non-refundable, while $1,400 of hotel reservations are still fully refundable. The immediate cancellation exposure is different from simply entering a $4,000 total. This is a hypothetical planning example, not a provider quote or a guarantee about what a policy will reimburse. Ask the insurer how to include later payments and changing penalties.

Our Japan trip cancellation guide explains how supplier refunds and insurance claims interact. Keep the booking invoices and refund terms with your quote so you can explain the cost entered.

Compare the benefits beside the price

For each shortlisted plan, open the certificate or policy wording linked from the result. Save it with the quote date and plan name. Two plans with similar prices can leave different expenses for you to pay.

  • Emergency medical: compare the limit, deductible, exclusions and whether benefits are primary or excess.
  • Evacuation: distinguish transfer for treatment from return travel home, and check who authorizes arrangements.
  • Cancellation: match the insured cost and read the listed reasons. A change of mind is not the same as a covered cancellation.
  • Interruption and delay: inspect the triggers, waiting time, per-day allowance and overall cap separately.
  • Activities: check the exact skiing, hiking, cycling or other activity you plan. A general sports label is not enough.
  • Age and health conditions: read eligibility and exclusion or waiver requirements before paying.

Do not infer claims quality from a polished app, a large headline limit or the lowest quote. The practical question is whether the issued plan addresses your trip's remaining gaps and whether you can follow its assistance and claim requirements.

Quotes We Actually Checked on September 15, 2026

JAPANODE checked two illustrative California-resident quotes for a 35-year-old traveler visiting Japan for 15 days with $5,000 in insured trip cost and no optional add-ons selected. These are real prices shown by the providers' quote tools, not advertised starting prices or the cost every traveler will pay. California was entered in both quote tools, as confirmed by the person who ran the quotes; the state is not displayed in the result screenshots. The VisitorsCoverage result capture does not show the exact travel dates, and the Faye capture does not show the initial trip deposit date. Because every input and the issued policies cannot be compared from these captures, this is not a definitive “cheapest provider” ranking.

Faye quote: The itinerary shown was November 8–22, 2026. The traveler birth year entered was 1991, making the traveler 35 at the time of the trip. The quote tool showed these base-plan prices and limits:

Faye planTotal quoteEmergency medicalMedical evacuationTrip cancellationTrip interruption
First$216.38$50,000, excess$250,000$5,000$5,000
Forward$242.33$250,000, primary$500,000$5,000$7,500
Flagship$264.01$250,000, primary$1,000,000$5,000$7,500

For this Faye quote, Forward cost $25.95 more than First and showed higher medical and evacuation limits, plus primary rather than excess medical cover. Flagship cost another $21.68 and raised the evacuation limit, but did not raise the $250,000 emergency-medical limit shown. Those differences matter more than the plan labels; check the current Faye coverage and plan documents for your state and quote before choosing.

VisitorsCoverage quote: Its result screen showed a 35-year-old traveler, 15 coverage days, Japan, $5,000 trip cost and an initial trip deposit date of September 10, 2026. The marketplace returned 18 plans; these two result cards illustrate how limits and price varied within the same search:

VisitorsCoverage planTotal quoteEmergency medicalMedical evacuationTrip cancellationTrip interruption
iTravelInsured Choice$131.81$100,000$500,000$5,000$7,500
Pathway Premium$192.03$200,000$1,000,000$5,000$7,500

These are two examples, not the only suitable plans among the 18 results. Both result cards described Cancel For Any Reason as an optional add-on; it was not included in the prices above. The initial deposit date can affect time-sensitive benefits, including pre-existing-condition waivers and CFAR eligibility, but a result-card note is not a guarantee of cover. Check the VisitorsCoverage plan details and the policy for the exact state and purchase date. Neither provider's quote is a purchase or a binding promise of claims payment.

Purchase timing: cancellation and existing conditions

Buying before departure and qualifying for a time-sensitive optional benefit are separate checks. A policy may still be available while a particular upgrade or waiver is no longer available to you. Enter the original payment date accurately and ask about any deadline that is unclear.

Faye's Cancel For Any Reason option

Faye's official CFAR page describes a paid add-on with these current conditions: purchase within 14 days of the initial trip deposit, cancel at least 48 hours before scheduled departure, and reimbursement of up to 75% of eligible non-refundable costs. Faye states that CFAR is not available in New York. The issued plan controls eligibility and the claim.

Those are Faye's published conditions, not a rule for every plan on a comparison website. If flexibility is the main reason you are buying, include the add-on price in the comparison and inspect its reimbursement percentage and cancellation deadline before choosing.

Pre-existing-condition rules

A pre-existing-condition waiver is not automatic just because a result card mentions one. Check the selected insurer's definition, purchase window, insured-cost requirements and any medical eligibility conditions. Do not assume the CFAR deadline and a medical waiver deadline are identical.

Ask the provider to point to the relevant wording if a condition, medication or recent treatment could affect your decision. Keep its response with the policy documents. A generic guide cannot determine whether a particular condition or future claim qualifies.

Long or open-ended trips

A semester-length stay, several countries or an uncertain return date may need a different comparison from a prepaid two-week holiday. Start with the long-stay Japan insurance guide to separate visitor travel cover from any resident obligations and to check the full route.

SafetyWing Essential is a travel-medical option with four-week billing and purchase while abroad. It should not be treated as a direct substitute for comprehensive protection of large prepaid trip costs. Inspect the plan's medical and evacuation limits, age eligibility, home-country rules and your destinations before buying.

Before paying: save a small comparison record

Keep the comparison short enough to finish. Record the two or three plans you actually considered, their total cost with selected upgrades, and the one benefit or exclusion that determined your choice. A long list of brand names is less useful than knowing why the chosen policy fits.

Before checkout, confirm the travelers, actual residence, complete dates, destinations and trip cost. Reopen the selected certificate rather than relying on a screenshot from a previous search. If an important activity or medical question remains unresolved, ask the provider before purchasing.

After purchase, save the issued policy, receipt, assistance number and claim instructions offline. Check how to contact assistance from Japan, when prior authorization is needed, and how to document treatment or disruption. Share those details with a traveling companion if appropriate.

For a fixed-date Japan holiday, return to the Faye quote option or multi-plan comparison with the same prepared inputs. If your dates or residence do not fit this page, use the general comparison to choose another route.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a fixed trip with non-refundable bookings, compare a Faye quote with eligible trip-insurance plans on VisitorsCoverage. Use identical ages, state of residence, dates and trip cost, then compare medical, evacuation, cancellation and exclusions. A long or open-ended trip may need a different medical-first option.

Original Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the US, apart from limited exceptions. Some Medigap policies include foreign emergency benefits. Check your exact existing plan, its limits and any evacuation benefit before buying additional insurance.

No. Faye's current FAQ says it must be purchased before the trip begins. If you are already abroad, compare eligible after-departure options and check their start rules. A new policy does not retroactively cover an event that has already happened.

No. It is an optional paid add-on. Faye currently states that it must be purchased within 14 days of the initial trip deposit and used at least 48 hours before scheduled departure, with reimbursement of up to 75% of eligible non-refundable trip costs. It is not available in New York; your issued plan controls.

No. They are historical examples checked on September 15, 2026 for a 35-year-old California resident, a 15-day Japan trip and $5,000 trip cost. They were not purchases or guarantees. Your state, dates, age, trip cost and selected plan can change both price and benefits.

Eligibility depends on the provider's residence and other policy rules, not simply your passport. A US citizen living elsewhere should use the product rules for their actual residence. Do not select a different state or country to obtain a quote you are not eligible to buy.
