Churaumi Aquarium and Bise Fukugi Tree Road make a practical pairing for one full day in northern Okinawa. Spend the first part of the visit at the aquarium, then leave time for a walk through Bise's shaded village lanes. From Naha, the journey north and back takes a substantial part of the day; staying in Motobu makes the combination more relaxed.
For most first-time visitors, the decision is about transport. A rental car offers flexibility, an independent bus trip gives you control over your time on site, and a sightseeing tour adds other attractions at a fixed pace. The bus tour featured below does not include Bise, so it serves a different itinerary.

Quick answer: make this a northern Okinawa day
If the aquarium is your main reason for coming, give it the largest block of time. Bise works well afterward because you can shorten the walk when the weather changes or the return bus approaches. You do not need to reach the end of every lane to enjoy the area.
| Your starting point | A practical allocation | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Naha, returning that evening | Travel north, aquarium, lunch, Bise if time allows, return | Extra distant stops or a tight dinner reservation |
| Motobu or nearby northern accommodation | Aquarium in the morning, lunch, an unhurried Bise walk | A compulsory drive back to Naha that night |
| An organized northern sightseeing tour | Follow its aquarium time and other listed stops | An independent Bise excursion unless explicitly agreed |
As an editorial starting point, allow two to three hours for the main aquarium, a separate lunch break, and one to two hours for Bise. Walking from a bus stop, finding the entrance, parking and waiting for food are additional. Families who like to stop at every exhibit may prefer to keep the whole day around the aquarium and Ocean Expo Park.
Our five-day Okinawa itinerary shows how this day fits between Naha and the north. If you want to include Kouri Island as well, an overnight in the north gives both destinations more breathing room.
Tickets, hours and what admission covers

The aquarium's official admission page lists the following standard prices, including tax:
| Visitor category | Standard admission |
|---|---|
| Adult | ¥2,180 |
| High-school student | ¥1,440 |
| Elementary or junior-high-school student | ¥710 |
| Child under six | Free |
Student categories follow the Japanese school year; check the rules if a child's age or school stage falls between categories. Keep the ticket: the aquarium permits re-entry on the same day when you present it at the entrance.
The published regular hours are 8:30–18:30, with last admission at 17:30. As checked on October 14, no scheduled closure was announced through March 31, 2027, although temporary closures remain possible. Summer extensions shown on that page apply to their stated dates; they are not the year-round timetable.
Ocean Expo Park is the wider setting, and the aquarium is one attraction within it. An aquarium ticket is not an all-inclusive pass for every surrounding facility. If you want another museum, garden, activity or program, check its own admission and opening information before adding it to the budget.
Last admission is a deadline, not a recommended arrival time for a full visit. An arrival close to 17:30 leaves little scope for both the aquarium and Bise, especially when you still need to reach an evening bus.
From Naha: car, direct bus or an organized tour
Driving gives the day more flexibility
The aquarium's access guide estimates about two hours from Naha Airport by car using the expressway. Treat that as a road estimate, with extra time for rental collection, traffic and walking after parking. Ocean Expo Park's car parks are free according to the same guide; follow the current park signs rather than assuming every gate is equally close to the aquarium.
If you are changing hotels that day, settle the luggage plan first. Ask the accommodation about storage or keep the sightseeing plan simple enough to reach check-in comfortably. A northern hotel can save a long return drive, but choose its actual location in relation to the aquarium, dinner and the next day's route.
Independent buses can work for aquarium plus Bise
Start with the operators linked from the aquarium's access page, including Okinawa Airport Shuttle and Yanbaru Express. Pick both directions for your travel date before buying attraction tickets. The aquarium advises allowing about ten minutes on foot from Kinen Koen-mae to its entrance; a bus arrival is not the same as an aquarium entry time.
For Okinawa Airport Shuttle, use the operator's timetable and stop information. Some journeys serve Bise Fukugi Namiki Iriguchi, which can make it practical to arrive near the aquarium and leave from Bise. Check the exact service rather than assuming every departure uses every stop.
Okinawa Airport Shuttle has announced that service 17, departing Naha Airport at 14:40, and service 22, departing Bise at 17:55, are suspended from October 15, 2026 through January 31, 2027. Rebuild your day around an operating return service; do not rely on a saved summer timetable. See the operator's notice.
The shuttle's two-rides ticket is listed at ¥3,800 for the Naha Airport–aquarium/Bise section. It does not reserve a seat, and boarding depends on availability. Combined with standard adult aquarium admission, that gives a ¥5,980 starting point, before food and other spending. Check the ticket's validity and eligible section before purchasing.
The same operator does not permit journeys solely between the aquarium and Bise. Plan to walk between them or arrange another suitable transfer. A two-rides ticket is not a local shuttle pass for that short section.
Download the return timetable and stop location before leaving Naha. A working data connection helps with maps and service notices; our Japan eSIM comparison covers options. Build in enough time to reach the stop early, particularly when a later departure is unavailable.
Tours solve a different transport problem
A sightseeing coach is useful when you want a northern overview without handling each bus connection. The trade-off is the timetable: aquarium time may also need to cover lunch, and a short Kouri stop does not equal a visit to Ocean Tower and Heart Rock. Compare the named stops and included admission, not just the headline price. The Okinawa without a car guide explains how to choose between an independent day and a tour.
Inside Churaumi: build around the main aquarium
The Kuroshio Sea tank is the natural centerpiece for a first visit. The aquarium's Kuroshio area guide explains the displays around this large tank. Allow room to pause there rather than assigning equal time to every part of the building.
Use the official aquarium guide to choose the rest of your route. A useful approach is to identify two or three priorities before arrival, then explore the intervening exhibits without chasing every presentation. Animal displays, feeding programs and access arrangements can change; check that day's information if a specific program matters to you.
The main aquarium and the wider park involve different amounts of walking. If someone in your group tires easily, decide where to take a break before adding another outdoor attraction. The aquarium publishes accessibility information for planning; confirm any essential assistance directly instead of assuming the whole aquarium–village outing has the same surfaces and gradients.
For lunch, compare the official restaurants and shops with your remaining time. A busy restaurant can use much of a short tour stop. Independent visitors can be more flexible, but should still protect the time needed for the return journey. If leaving and re-entering, keep the admission ticket with you.
Bise Fukugi Tree Road: a slower second stop

Bise is a village of tree-lined lanes, not a second aquarium attraction. The Motobu Tourism Association describes roughly one kilometer of fukugi-lined paths extending toward Cape Bise. The trees were planted around homes as windbreaks, which helps explain the close relationship between the paths, walls and houses.
Choose a short section to walk first. You can extend toward the coast if the weather, daylight and return transport allow it. There is no need to turn the walk into a complete circuit, especially after several hours in the aquarium. The sea views and shaded lanes offer different experiences; neither requires a swim.
Getting from the aquarium to the lanes
The local bicycle operator Bisenchu publishes walking directions and estimates about ten minutes from the aquarium to its location near the village entrance. Its route goes north along Route 114, then turns toward the Orion hotel area. This is an operator's estimate to one point, not a guaranteed time from every aquarium exit to the far end of Bise.
For a relaxed plan, allow extra time to leave the aquarium grounds, check the walking route and find the lane you want. Mark the return stop separately on your map. Finishing a walk at the coast does not automatically put you beside the stop you used earlier.
Walking is the simplest choice for a short visit. If renting a bicycle, confirm the price, return deadline, permitted route and availability of an appropriate size directly with the rental shop. Do not assume bicycle hire is included in an aquarium ticket or bus pass.
Respect the village and adapt to the weather
Keep entrances clear, stay on public routes and make space for residents and other walkers. Ask before photographing people at close range. If you stop for a photograph, step out of the flow of the lane rather than blocking it with a group or parked bicycle.
Shade makes the walk pleasant, but it does not remove heat or humidity. Carry water and use footwear suited to walking on varied surfaces. Our summer clothing guide can help with packing. In heavy rain or strong wind, shorten or skip the outdoor portion; the pairing works because Bise is flexible, not because you must complete it in all conditions.
A simple day plan, with room to shorten it
Use the following as an order of activities, then fit it around the bus you can actually take or the time your group needs. These are suggested blocks, not transport departure times.
| Part of the day | Suggested plan | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| First block | Travel to the aquarium and enter | If the journey runs late, preserve aquarium time first |
| Main visit | Aquarium, with time at the Kuroshio Sea tank | Choose whether extra park attractions matter more than Bise |
| Meal break | Lunch without rushing the final minutes | Check how much time remains before the return journey |
| Afternoon | Walk toward Bise and explore a few lanes | Turn back earlier if heat, rain or tiredness changes the plan |
| Final block | Reach the correct bus stop or return to the car | Allow a margin for walking and finding the pickup point |
If staying nearby, you can swap the order and walk in Bise first. If returning to Naha by bus, anchor the day to the return service and work backward. Keep a fallback that you would still enjoy: a full aquarium visit followed by a meal is a successful day even without the village walk.
When to add Kouri, and when to leave it for another day
Kouri Island is close enough to consider on a northern driving route, but it introduces another set of stops and parking decisions. Ocean Tower's official access page gives about 25 minutes by car from the aquarium; this is only the drive to the tower, not the time needed to see the bridge, visit the tower, find lunch and walk to Heart Rock.
If you want both a proper aquarium visit and a relaxed Bise walk, our recommendation is to give Kouri another half-day from a northern base. The Kouri Island guide separates the sights and explains the island bus route. For a single driving day, choose either Bise or a longer Kouri visit as the main second stop.
