Kouri Island is an easy island to include in a northern Okinawa road trip because you reach it by bridge, without a ferry. For a first visit, focus on the views around Kouri Bridge, the elevated panorama at Kouri Ocean Tower and, if you have time, Heart Rock on the north coast. They are separate stops, so plan the connections as well as the sights.

A rental car gives you the most freedom, but it is not the only option. Yanbaru Express's Three Islands Line serves Kouri, Heart Rock and Ocean Tower, with a connection from its Airport Line at Nakijin Village Office. A sightseeing tour is simpler to arrange but may include only a short Kouri Beach stop.

Quick answer: choose two or three stops

Kouri suits travelers who want sea views and a few distinct places to explore. You can enjoy a short stop around the bridge, but allow roughly half a day on and around the island if you want the tower, Heart Rock and a meal. That is time from a northern base, not a half-day round trip from Naha.

StopWhy choose it?What to allow for
Kouri Beach and the bridge areaA first view of the sea and bridge, with places to take a break nearbyParking or the bus stop, then time on foot
Kouri Ocean TowerAn elevated view over the bridge and surrounding waterAdmission, the facility route and time at the viewpoints
Heart Rock at Tinu BeachThe island's distinctive rock formations on the north coastA separate journey and a walk down to the shore

During my Okinawa visit in May 2019, Kouri Island stood out for its beautiful sea scenery. That is a personal impression from that trip; the transport, prices and opening details below come from current sources. The photographs in this guide are PhotoAC stock images.

If your main plan is an aquarium day, decide whether Kouri is the primary second stop or whether you would prefer the closer, slower village walk in our Churaumi Aquarium and Bise guide. Trying to give all three places a full visit from Naha can make the day feel rushed.

Kouri Bridge and the first viewpoint

Kouri Bridge joins the island to Yagaji Island, which connects onward to Okinawa's main island. Okinawa's official destination guide places Kouri Beach at the island end of the bridge and identifies the north-coast beaches as separate destinations. Save those places individually on your map before setting off.

Start around the bridge and beach area if you want a straightforward introduction. The official Okinawa tourism listing for Sorahashi describes the visitor facility just after the bridge, with food options, tourist information and parking. It is also a useful named landmark when comparing bus stops. Check the current parking signs and opening information when you arrive.

Take photographs from an appropriate stopping place after parking. The bridge is a working road, so the view does not justify stopping in a traffic lane. Walking the entire bridge is not necessary for this itinerary; you can appreciate it from the shore or the tower instead.

The photograph above shows the bridge from Ocean Tower, so that elevated composition belongs to a tower visit. A short beach stop gives a different angle. This matters when comparing a tour's photographs with its actual stops: a listing that says “Kouri Island” may not include the viewpoint you have in mind.

Kouri Ocean Tower: views, tickets and time

Ocean Tower is the clearest choice if your priority is looking across the bridge and sea from above. The operator describes indoor observation floors and an outdoor rooftop deck, plus an automated cart journey through the gardens. Its quoted 82 meters is elevation above sea level, not the height of the building itself.

The current Japanese facility page gives these standard details:

ItemPublished information
Opening hours10:00–18:00
Last entry17:30
Adult admission, age 16 and over¥1,000
Child admission, ages 6–15¥500
Under sixFree under the published child rules
Address538 Kouri, Nakijin Village

The facility normally opens daily, but severe weather can change operations. The rooftop may be unavailable even when other parts of the attraction are open. If the outdoor deck is your main reason for visiting, check conditions before buying a ticket.

As a planning allowance, give the tower about 60–90 minutes, then add any meal or longer shopping stop separately. This is our suggested block, not a timed route or a promised queue length. Arriving at last entry leaves much less scope for browsing and waiting for a clear view.

Access within the tower complex

The operator's FAQ says the rooftop requires stairs and the cart involves a transfer; it describes the other areas as accessible. If those steps or transfers are a concern, contact the facility about your particular needs before committing to the visit.

The cart belongs to the attraction. It is not transport around Kouri Island and cannot take you to Heart Rock or back to the beach. Likewise, reaching the tower by bus does not remove the need to plan how you will leave after your visit.

There is a shell museum in the paid area, giving you something more than the viewpoint itself. Decide how much time that interests your group before adding another attraction. A traveler who wants a brief panorama will plan differently from a family who wants to spend time with the exhibits, gardens and shops.

Heart Rock at Tinu Beach

Heart Rock is on the north side of Kouri Island at Tinu Beach, away from the bridge-end beach and Ocean Tower. Treat it as another stop with its own approach, rather than something you automatically see while crossing the bridge.

The appeal is the shape of the rocks against the water. The angle you choose and the sea conditions affect what the scene looks like, so avoid building the day around recreating one exact photograph. Give yourself enough time to look around without rushing the walk back.

For a sightseeing visit, allow roughly 30–60 minutes after reaching the area, with more time if the route takes your group longer. That is an editorial allowance, not a guarantee about parking or path access. Choose a signed parking area if driving and check its displayed charges; we do not assume all nearby lots have identical fees or facilities.

Wear shoes you can comfortably walk in and follow any access notices. If someone cannot manage the shore approach, the bridge area and tower may be a better combination. You do not need Heart Rock to make a Kouri visit worthwhile.

Treat Heart Rock as a sightseeing stop

Okinawa's official guide describes the northern beaches, including Tinu, as lacking lifeguards and visitor facilities. Plan to see the shore and rock formations here. If you want to swim, choose a managed swimming area and check its current opening and sea conditions; the prefectural sea safety guide explains the distinction.

Getting there from Naha or Churaumi

By car

Ocean Tower's official access page estimates 90–120 minutes from Naha via the expressway and about 25 minutes from Churaumi Aquarium. Add time for traffic, parking and whatever else you stop to see. Those are estimates for reaching the facility, not door-to-door promises from every Naha hotel.

For a northern overnight, think about your hotel and dinner together. A base in Motobu or elsewhere in the north can reduce backtracking, but properties vary widely in how close they are to restaurants and bus services. Our five-day Okinawa itinerary explains the Naha-and-north split.

If picking up a rental car, leave the first sightseeing block flexible. Completing the rental process, finding your route and taking an initial break all use time. On the final day of a rental, include the return procedure in your plan instead of treating the advertised drive to the airport as the whole journey.

By public bus: the Three Islands Line

The Yanbaru Express Three Islands Line page confirms a connection with the Airport Line at Nakijin Village Office — Nakijin-son Yakuba. The current timetable linked there, revised November 1, 2025 and checked on October 14, 2026, includes these Kouri stops:

  • 105: Kouri Island Station Sorahashi, near the bridge end of the island.
  • 106: Tokeihama / Heart Rock, for the north-coast area.
  • 107: Kouri Ocean Tower, for the attraction.

The island loop runs from Sorahashi through Heart Rock and the tower, then back to Sorahashi. Plan your sightseeing in that order when it fits the timetable. Check both the island loop and the onward connection to the Airport Line; the last bus moving around Kouri is not necessarily a bus that gets you back to Naha.

The operator's linked timetable and fare PDF also shows a ¥1,000 adult one-day Kouri Free Pass, covering the Three Islands Line and a limited northern section of the Airport Line. It does not cover the journey all the way from Naha. Some departures run only on weekdays, so use the correct column for your date.

A public-bus day is feasible, but needs more planning than arriving at a stop and taking the next departure. Save the timetable and return stop locations, and leave room for delays. Our Okinawa without a car guide helps you decide whether this independence is worth the extra connections.

Half a day, a northern overnight or a tour

The best format depends on the amount of time you actually want on Kouri. A short visit is enough for a glimpse of the bridge and beach, while the tower and Heart Rock justify a longer block.

An independent half-day from the north

This suggested order works naturally for a driving visit. Bus travelers should adjust it to the loop and transfer times rather than following the same clock.

Part of the visitSuggested allocationMain choice
Bridge area and beach view30–45 minutesEnjoy the shore view and orient yourself
Ocean Tower60–90 minutesInclude the exhibits or focus on the panorama
Lunch or a cafe break45–60 minutesChoose somewhere that fits the onward route
Heart Rock30–60 minutesAdd it if weather and the shore approach suit your group

Travel between stops, parking and queues are extra. If one place holds your attention, reduce another stop rather than rushing all four. For a bus visit, moving Heart Rock before the tower can better match the direction of the island loop.

Pairing Kouri with an aquarium visit

If you have two northern days, make one an aquarium-and-Bise day and the other a Kouri half-day. This lets you choose the clearer weather for the sea viewpoints and makes a long lunch or a slower morning easier to accommodate.

With only one day from Naha, choose your priority. A full aquarium visit plus a short Kouri overview is a different experience from a thorough island visit. Bise is a further addition, so use the Churaumi and Bise plan to decide which part to keep.

A sightseeing bus with a brief Kouri stop

The tour below is for an overview of several places. Its published route includes about 20 minutes at Kouri Beach, not a visit to Ocean Tower and Heart Rock. Choose the Churaumi Aquarium ticket option if you want the aquarium: the Tropical Dream Center ticket is an alternative option, and neither package includes both admissions. Lunch and Cape Manzamo admission are extra under the published listing.

Check your selected pickup point, attraction option and return location before paying. Do not buy a separate aquarium ticket until you know whether the selected tour includes it. If you want to end at a different stop, confirm that arrangement with the operator instead of assuming the bus can make an unscheduled hotel drop-off.

Weather, photos and an alternative plan

Kouri's appeal depends partly on being outdoors, so give the day some flexibility. The tower provides indoor viewing areas, but poor visibility still affects the view and severe weather can affect access. Cloud cover also changes the appearance of the sea; bright stock photographs are not a forecast for your travel date.

If conditions are poor, consider moving the island visit to another day and spending more time at the aquarium or in Naha. For a city alternative, our Naha one-day itinerary keeps the sights closer together. Make changes early enough to respect accommodation, car and tour cancellation terms.

For an independent day, carry water, sun protection, a charged phone and walking shoes. The Japan summer clothing guide covers hot-weather packing, while the Japan eSIM comparison helps with maps and transport information. Budget for admission, food, transport and any parking separately; the Japan trip budget guide provides a wider planning framework.

Before leaving your hotel, identify the one place you most want to see and the time you need to start the return journey. Those two decisions make it much easier to enjoy the other stops without turning a coastal day into a race.
