5-Day Okinawa Itinerary: Naha, Churaumi and Kouri Island

Plan five days on Okinawa's main island with Naha, Shuri, Churaumi, Bise and Kouri Island, choosing hotel bases and transport before adding more stops.

For a first five-day Okinawa itinerary, spend two days around Naha and Shuri, two days on selected northern sights, and keep departure day flexible. With a car, one night around Motobu or Nago lets you split Churaumi Aquarium and Bise from Kouri Island. Without driving, stay in Naha and replace the northern overnight with one planned bus excursion.

This plan means five days and four nights, arriving and departing at Naha Airport. It focuses on Okinawa's main island, with an optional Tokashiki or snorkeling day for the Naha-based version. Ishigaki and Miyako need their own trip planning; they are not nearby stops to add to this route.

The day-by-day order below is an editorial travel plan. It is not a claim that we personally followed this exact sequence. Practical information and selected tour details were checked on October 14, 2026. We may earn a commission when you book through the GetYourGuide options below; those comparisons are based on published information, not personal tour participation.

The five-day plan at a glance

4Kouri Island, then return the car in NahaA relaxed Naha day or one sea excursionNaha
5Airport transfer, with a small extra stop only if time permitsSameDeparture

Our starting recommendation is Naha for nights 1, 2 and 4; the north for night 3 if driving. This adds two hotel changes, but it gives the northern sights separate days. If packing and checking in again would spoil the trip, keep all four nights in Naha and reduce the number of stops instead.

The official Okinawa main-island route is useful for understanding the region's geography. Our five-day version spreads the sightseeing and reserves arrival and departure time rather than treating every day as a full road trip.

Choose your transport and hotel bases first

Driving for the northern section

A car is most useful for the part of this itinerary involving Churaumi, Bise and several Kouri stops. You do not need to retain it throughout the Naha walking days. Compare collecting near your hotel on Day 3 with collecting at the airport earlier, including the opening time, parking and the process for returning it on Day 4.

Before paying, ask the rental company to confirm the documents it accepts for your country and license. Also check vehicle size, child seats if needed, insurance terms, fuel return requirements and the drop-off location. The rental quote alone is not the full driving cost.

For the northern night, favor a location that serves your actual evening. Motobu is useful for being near the aquarium area; Nago may suit travelers who prefer a larger town as a base. Check parking and food arrangements at the specific property. A secluded room is less convenient if every meal requires another drive.

Staying in Naha without a car

Use the Okinawa without a car guide to choose a base near the stations and stops you need. For Day 3, make one of two choices:

  • Independent aquarium and Bise visit: more control over time at those places, with a dated bus plan and a return journey to protect.
  • Northern sightseeing tour: several headline sights with fixed stops, but less time at each and a different route from our driving version.

The bus tour below combines the aquarium with a brief Kouri stop and other sights. It does not reproduce the Bise walk, Ocean Tower or Heart Rock. Choose it if an overview is the priority, not simply because all the place names look close together on a map.

Day 1: arrive in Naha and keep the evening local

Make arrival day about the hotel, food and a short first look at Naha. If your flight lands late, the itinerary still works without an attraction that evening. Flight arrival, baggage collection, reaching transport and checking in all take time that a nominal five-day holiday can conceal.

Yui Rail links the airport with central Naha. Choose the station for your hotel rather than treating Kokusai Street as one precise destination. For a group with large bags or a hotel far from a station, compare a suitable taxi or hotel-arranged transfer as well.

Once settled, walk a manageable stretch of Kokusai Street, find dinner and buy anything you need for the next morning. You can save the market and pottery streets for Day 2. Our Naha one-day itinerary also explains how to shorten the city route to an arrival-day walk.

Resist making the first evening responsible for all your souvenir shopping. Browsing is more enjoyable when you do not also need to locate a restaurant, learn the transport system and solve tomorrow's departure. If the city is your main interest, that is another reason to keep four nights in Naha rather than move north.

Day 2: Shuri and Naha, planned around your date

Shuri provides the historical focus of this trip. Combine it with part of central Naha, but give the castle its own substantial block of time. The station, Shureimon gate and the main hall entrance are separate points; a station arrival time is not a castle reservation time.

Shuri changes in November 2026

The reconstructed Seiden is scheduled to open to the public on November 23, 2026 at noon. The park is closed on November 22; on November 23 the castle's free area reopens at 11:15 and the paid area at noon. Check the official opening-hours notice and use our Shuri Castle ticket and reservation guide before assigning this day.

If visiting before the main hall opens, decide whether the areas currently accessible match your interests. Do not book a trip on the assumption that you can already enter the reconstructed Seiden. For visits after the scheduled reopening, arrange the relevant timed reservation first, then fit the rest of the day around it.

A practical city pairing is Shuri in one half of the day and the Makishi market area or Tsuboya in the other. Choose one connected walk rather than repeatedly crossing the city. On a very hot or wet day, shorten the outdoor section and take a longer lunch.

The Naha guide covers the market's closure calendar and the pottery streets. In particular, do not assume every museum in that neighborhood is open: the Tsuboya Pottery Museum has a temporary closure period, detailed there. If your Shuri visit falls on a closure date, move this city day within the trip instead of forcing the original order.

Day 3: Churaumi Aquarium and Bise, with a northern night

Collect the car early enough to enjoy the aquarium without racing through the afternoon. The aquarium's official access guidance gives approximately two hours from Naha Airport by expressway. That is a geographic reference, not a guaranteed hotel-to-entrance journey: car collection, traffic, parking and the park walk need their own allowance.

Make Churaumi Aquarium the main visit, lunch the break, and Bise the shorter afternoon walk. Our Churaumi and Bise guide explains admission, opening hours and the relationship between the aquarium and the wider Ocean Expo Park. Do not buy admission twice if your chosen package already includes it.

For planning, allow around two to three hours for the aquarium, then reassess the afternoon. This is our suggested pace, not a prescribed tour length. Families who want a slower tank visit, additional park facilities or longer breaks should reduce the Bise section.

Bise's shaded lanes give the day a different rhythm from an indoor attraction. It is a lived-in neighborhood, so stay on appropriate paths, keep voices down and respect homes and entrances. A short loop can be enough; there is no need to turn the walk into a checklist of every lane and coastal viewpoint.

Afterward, check in at your northern accommodation and keep dinner close to where you are staying. Adding a distant sunset stop would erode the benefit of sleeping in the north. Ask about meal availability before arrival, especially if you have a late check-in or dietary needs.

For the Naha-based version, this is your full northern excursion day. The car-free guide includes an Airport Shuttle example for October 15, 2026–January 31, 2027 and explains the suspended departures. A tour may instead include Kouri briefly, but Bise usually requires a different plan.

Day 4: Kouri Island, then return toward Naha

Kouri is a good reason to retain flexibility in the northern part of the trip. Decide whether you mainly want the bridge and beach area, a view from Ocean Tower, or the northern coast's Heart Rock. They are distinct stops with different amounts of walking and time.

Our Kouri Island guide compares them and covers current tower information and public transport. Start from your northern hotel and choose two priorities before considering a third. Do not treat an attractive coastal road as a promise that every viewpoint has convenient parking.

Kouri Island's sea was one of the highlights of my May 2019 visit. That memory is a reason to leave room to enjoy the scenery; the access and practical information in this guide come from current sources.

Choose lunch and a point at which you will begin the journey back toward Naha. Leave room for fuel, the rental return procedure and the onward journey from the rental office to the hotel. Booking a tightly timed evening activity in Naha creates unnecessary pressure on a road-trip day.

If rough weather makes coastal walking unattractive, shorten the island visit. A scenic stop does not need to become a swim, and a photograph of calm water is not evidence of conditions on your date. Keep the final night in Naha for this version rather than trying to combine a northern hotel checkout, car return and airport departure the next morning.

Day 5: departure and an optional nearby stop

Work backward from your airline's airport and check-in requirements. Include the journey from the hotel, collecting any stored bags and the possibility of disruption. For an early flight, breakfast and the airport are the whole plan.

For a later flight, choose a short walk or meal near your accommodation. The useful limit is whether you can finish comfortably and collect your bags, not whether a map suggests another attraction is technically reachable. Ask the hotel about storage before assuming it can hold everything after checkout.

We do not place a northern excursion or island boat trip on departure day. If you want another full sightseeing day, add a night. That is usually more useful than trying to extract one from a flight day that already contains several fixed deadlines.

Optional swap: Tokashiki Island or a snorkeling day

For the Naha-based version, use Day 4 for one sea excursion after the northern bus day. For the driving version, retain the Kouri day unless you redesign the northern overnight or extend the trip. These activities each deserve their own day.

Check the operator's meeting point before choosing the hotel and morning transport. A central Naha hotel does not mean every harbor is within a short walk. Keep the departure day separate and consider cancellation rules for both the activity and any connected booking.

The selected Tokashiki package lists return boat travel between Tomari and Tokashiki, island transfers to Aharen Beach, and a curry lunch. The beach-only and guided-snorkeling options differ. Check the selected boat, seasonal times, dietary arrangements and participation requirements; do not infer snorkeling equipment is included in every ticket.

The listing also identifies an extra ¥100 environmental tax for visitors aged 15 and over, payable in cash. Travel insurance is not included. The photograph above illustrates the island's scenery and does not identify the beach used by this product.

Check the activity and your insurance separately

Ask what any operator-provided cover includes. For your own policy, check snorkeling, medical treatment, search and rescue, evacuation, exclusions and excesses separately. An activity booking does not establish that all of these costs are covered. Your existing policy may already be sufficient; our Japan travel insurance comparison explains what to compare.

Weather, booking order and the trip budget

Choose the trip's emphasis for the season. The official Okinawa climate guide explains the subtropical climate and seasonal differences. A sightseeing trip can still work when swimming is not your priority. Boats and outdoor activities need a more flexible plan, especially when the operator changes or cancels service.

Keep at least one part of the Naha schedule movable. If the forecast changes, rearranging a city walk is easier than rearranging a nonrefundable package, a northern hotel and a flight together. Severe weather can also affect indoor facilities and transport, so confirm operations instead of assuming that an indoor stop will necessarily remain open.

Book in this order:

  1. Flights and the four-night pattern, deciding whether to move north.
  2. Any essential Shuri reservation or dated northern excursion.
  3. The rental car or bus arrangements that make those dates work.
  4. Optional activities, after checking meeting points and cancellation terms.

For the budget, total four nights, meals, local transport, the northern journey and admission. Add fuel, tolls and parking for the driving plan, or the full group's ticket costs for the Naha-based version. Compare identical inclusions: a cheap bus seat and a tour with aquarium admission are different purchases.

Use our Japan trip budget guide for the broader calculation and the Japan eSIM comparison for navigation and booking access. For packing, see summer clothing and heat planning, adjusting for your travel month. The most useful upgrade to this route is enough time at your chosen places, rather than more stops between them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Five days can cover a focused main-island trip with Naha and selected northern sights. This plan counts arrival and departure days and does not include Ishigaki or Miyako.

The northern driving version uses a car for flexibility around Churaumi, Bise and Kouri. Without one, use the separate Naha-based variant with a verified bus service or day tour and fewer stops.

Choose Naha for city time and convenient evenings, or add northern nights when they give you more time near the sights you want. Check airport transport before deciding on the last night.

With a car and an early northern start, some travelers combine them, but this itinerary spreads them out. From Naha without a car, do not assume the same sequence works on public transport.
