Why I Recommend Kashikojima Hojoen for an Ise-Shima Stay

Our family stay at Kashikojima Hojoen: unforgettable Ago Bay views, morning open-air baths, meals, and practical advice for booking this Ise-Shima ryokan.

The moment I remember most clearly from Kashikojima Hojoen (賢島宝生苑) is walking into our room and seeing Ago Bay spread out in front of us. I kept returning to the window to look at the water and take another photograph. The view before sunset was beautiful; waking up to the bay the next morning felt just as special.

This Japanese ryokan is in Kashikojima, Shima City, Mie Prefecture, on the coastal side of Ise-Shima. I stayed for one night from March 3, 2023, with two adults and one young child sharing a KAYO Wing Japanese-style room. Our plan included dinner and breakfast. Between the room's outlook and the open-air baths overlooking the same bay, the sea became the part of the stay I remember most.

This review combines my recollections, visit photographs and booking record with current information checked on October 12, 2026. Official room and bath photographs are credited individually; the dinner and dining-venue photographs are my own. Room categories have changed since my stay. Allow a separate journey from Ise Jingu to the hotel, and use our Ise-Shima travel guide for the full sightseeing route.

Is Kashikojima Hojoen right for your Ise-Shima stay?

I would recommend Hojoen for an overnight ryokan stay built around Ago Bay, especially if you can leave time for a morning bath. The hotel felt very clean and luxurious to me, and our stay with a young child went smoothly. The room view and open-air bathing were the highlights. For a wider Ise-Shima trip, it makes a rewarding coastal night after the shrines; the free shuttle from Kashikojima Station also makes arrival practical without a car.

An early start at Ise JinguAccommodation in Ise reduces the journey to the shrines. Hojoen makes more sense when the coast is also a priority.

For bath-focused travellers, tattoos must be covered with tattoo cover stickers to use the communal baths, as the hotel confirmed directly to us on October 14, 2026. Its official FAQ also says there is no private bath available to reserve. For a trip arriving late and leaving immediately after breakfast, consider whether you will have enough time for the parts of Hojoen that attracted you.

Our March 2023 stay: room, meals and price

We stayed for one night in a KAYO Wing Japanese-style room, with dinner and breakfast included. These are the details from our reservation:

DetailOur booking
StayMarch 3–4, 2023; one night
PartyTwo adults and one young child; one room
WingKAYO / 華陽棟
Room descriptionJapanese-style room, listed as 12.5 + 2 tatami mats
MealsDinner and breakfast included; restaurant dining
Dinner planStone-grilled Matsusaka beef and live hime-abalone cooked on a ceramic hotplate

The confirmation listed ¥21,000 per adult, plus ¥2,200 for the young child. Those charges totalled ¥44,200. A coupon reduced the booking amount by ¥8,840, leaving ¥35,360, listed as consumption tax and service charge included.

This is a historical family booking from March 2023, including a sale plan and coupon. For today's prices, compare the same dates, guest ages, room, meals and cancellation terms. A room-only price is a different purchase from the two-meal stay we booked.

The room view: what stayed with me most

The water was the first thing that caught my eye when I entered the room. Ago Bay opened out directly in front of us, and I found myself going back to the window throughout the stay. I would look outside, take a photograph, then find myself doing exactly the same thing a little later.

The evening scenery before sunset was one of the highlights, but the view was just as memorable when I woke the next morning. Having that outlook from our own room meant I could enjoy it again and again. It is the strongest memory I took home from Hojoen.

Room choices: KAYO, Suikei, Rankei and SANYO

Our reservation said KAYO Wing, 12.5 + 2 tatami mats, with restaurant meals. Do not search for that old wording and assume it identifies an unchanged room today. The hotel rebranded its room categories from April 1, 2026, alongside a programme of renovations. Its published schedule targets early November 2026 for the fourth-floor reopening; confirm the situation for your dates.

The current official room guide lists ocean views throughout and makes the following distinctions. Check the selected rate as well as the room description.

Current categoryLocation and room choicePublished dining arrangement
SuikeiKAYO Wing upper floors, including suitesMeals in your room
RankeiKAYO Wing; Japanese-style rooms or rooms with bedsMeals in a dining area
SANYO Wing standardJapanese-style rooms in the SANYO WingMeals in a dining area

For booking, focus on the sleeping arrangement and where your meals are served. The room photographs below show current official examples rather than our March 2023 room.

The distinction is practical. Choose a tatami room if the traditional room layout is part of the experience you want. If you prefer beds, select a category explicitly showing them. Do not rely on a general hotel photograph when the booking page names a particular room type. The hotel also links room categories to different dining arrangements, so a room upgrade may change how the evening works.

With a child, enter the correct age and check the child's meal and bedding arrangements before paying. Our historical child charge does not establish those inclusions for a new reservation. Confirm the details for your party, especially if the booking platform's translated room description is brief.

The Ago Bay onsen: garden baths and panoramic views

The open-air bath was another highlight of my stay. Looking out over Ago Bay from the water gave it a wonderful sense of openness. I also enjoyed walking outside around the hotel; being out in that setting felt good in itself.

On this trip with our young child, I made time for the baths both at night and the following morning. The morning visit was my favourite. The clear morning air and the view across the bay made it feel like the best possible start to the day. If you are deciding how much time to leave at Hojoen, I would protect that part of the morning instead of rushing straight to the next attraction.

The official bath guide identifies Asanagi-no-Yu as the men's garden bath and Yunagi-no-Yu as the women's. The following photographs come from the labelled downloads in the hotel's official gallery.

There is also a panoramic indoor bath. The garden baths are reached from the main bathing areas, and the hotel directs guests to wash in the main bath because the garden baths have no washing area. Follow the on-site directions for the connecting corridor rather than treating the outdoor bath as a separate entrance from your room.

Guests with tattoos may use the communal baths if their tattoos are covered with tattoo cover stickers. Kashikojima Hojoen confirmed this directly to JAPANODE by email on October 14, 2026. Uncovered tattoos are not permitted. For questions about covering your tattoo, use the official inquiry form before booking.

The hotel FAQ also says there is no private bath available to reserve. If shared bathing is unsuitable for you, confirm a workable arrangement directly before choosing this stay. A bathroom inside a guest room is a different facility; the FAQ says its water is heated water.

For a first onsen visit, read our onsen etiquette and tattoo guide before arrival. Keep photography to the authorised images shown here; do not take a camera into occupied bathing areas.

Dinner and breakfast: our experience and meal plans

Our meals were in a large dining venue shared with other guests, as part of the plan we had booked. We were travelling with a young child, and the staff were attentive to us during the meal. That care helped make the time enjoyable for our family.

I was happy with both dinner and the breakfast buffet. For us, the meals and the staff's attention were a positive part of the stay, alongside the room view and baths.

Our 2023 sale plan explicitly included stone-grilled Matsusaka beef and live hime-abalone cooked on a ceramic hotplate, with restaurant dining. It also included breakfast. Those inclusions come from the reservation; they should not be treated as a standard menu attached to every stay.

Our dinner photographs

These are my photographs of our dinner, showing the tabletop abalone dish, sashimi and beef ready to cook. They give a closer look at the meal that accompanied our stay; today's menu depends on the plan and season.

Breakfast and dining arrangements

I was also happy with the breakfast buffet. My dining-room photograph below shows the wooden screens between the seating areas.

For current plans, the hotel's official cuisine page presents seasonal kaiseki, a Japanese meal served across several dishes, and shows AGONOUMI as a restaurant venue. Our reservation did not name the restaurant. Check both the dining venue and breakfast format for your selected plan, particularly when comparing restaurant meals with in-room dining.

If you have dietary requirements, contact the hotel before booking. Its current FAQ says halal and vegan options are not offered. Do not assume that a seafood-heavy menu can be adapted to suit every diet.

Around the hotel: shared spaces, garden and bay views

My overall impression was of a very clean, luxurious hotel. Our visit photographs show the spaces between the room, restaurant and baths: a broad lounge, a multistorey atrium and seating tucked beside the stairs. Hojoen has the scale of a substantial hotel, with Japanese-style architectural details throughout these shared spaces.

The rockwork and waterfall are another part of the interior captured in my photographs. The same atrium takes on a different atmosphere beneath the blue lighting.

A morning walk by Ago Bay

In the morning, I also went out into the garden in front of the hotel. I remember walking down closer to the water and feeling the morning breeze by Ago Bay. Being outside, so close to the sea, felt wonderful. It is another reason I am glad we had time to enjoy the hotel before leaving.

Staying at Hojoen with a young child

We had no particular difficulties travelling with our child, and it was a very good family stay. The staff's attention during meals stood out, and I still found time to enjoy the baths in the evening and again in the morning.

The small thing I kept an eye on in the room was the shoji: the sliding screens with paper panels. I worried that our child might tear the paper. That is a useful detail to keep in mind if this is your first Japanese-style room with a curious young child.

We were also mindful of noise in the shared spaces and dining venue so that our child would not disturb other guests. Those were ordinary things to watch as parents, rather than problems that spoiled the stay. Our experience was positive; for your booking, check the child's meals, bedding and charges for their age rather than assuming they match our 2023 arrangement.

Kashikojima Hojoen and the 2016 G7 Ise-Shima Summit

Hojoen's garden hosted the summit chair's press conference on May 27, 2016. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe addressed the press with Ago Bay behind him. Mie Prefecture's official summit record identifies Kashikojima Hojoen as the venue for that conference; the main G7 meetings took place at the separate Shima Kanko Hotel.

The hotel's account of its Summit Memorial Garden describes the temporary stage used for the event and the bay scenery behind it. If this history interests you, ask at reception about seeing the garden during your stay.

You can also visit Samieru, the Ise-Shima Summit Memorial Hall, at Kashikojima Station. It is an easy cultural addition to a station visit, especially if you want context for the summit connection before heading to the hotel.

Getting to Kashikojima Hojoen from Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto or Tokyo

The railway destination is Kashikojima Station (賢島駅), on Kintetsu. From there, the hotel provides a free shuttle taking about three minutes, with no reservation required according to the official access information. Check the posted timetable against your arrival train.

The hotel's official access page gives these broad rail estimates to Kashikojima Station, before the final shuttle. Check actual departures and transfers for your date.

From Centrair Airport, one rail option is Meitetsu to Nagoya, then Kintetsu to Kashikojima. On an arrival day, allow for airport formalities before deciding that a dinner-inclusive booking is practical.

The exterior of Kashikojima Station with the Japanese station name above the entrance
Kashikojima Station is the railway arrival point. Use the hotel's current shuttle timetable for the final connection.

The hotel's current FAQ lists check-in from 3:00–6:00 p.m., with advance contact requested for later arrivals, and check-out at 10:00 a.m. If dinner is included, confirm its time as well. A train that reaches the area in the evening can leave little room for checking in and getting to dinner.

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass does not cover Kintetsu. Our Japan train guide explains how fares and limited express reservations fit together. If driving, the hotel lists free parking.

From Ise Jingu: train connections or the Pearl Shuttle

For a flexible departure after sightseeing, take a local bus from Naiku to a suitable Kintetsu station, such as Isuzugawa, and continue by train to Kashikojima. If you finish around Geku, use Iseshi Station. Our Ise-Shima transport and itinerary guide explains the shrine connections.

The Pearl Shuttle is a useful alternative: a separately operated, paid bus connecting Naiku and Hojoen's entrance by reservation. The operator's April 2026–March 2027 information lists ¥1,500 one way per adult, with a scheduled Naiku departure at 3:30 p.m. reaching Hojoen at 4:36 p.m. Standard web booking closes at 5:30 p.m. the previous day; check current availability, exclusions and pickup details before relying on it.

This service has limited departures and serves Naiku rather than Geku. It is separate from the hotel's free Kashikojima Station shuttle. The afternoon journey can fit a shrine day followed by dinner at the inn, but allow for road delays.

Where to stay in Ise-Shima: Kashikojima, Ise or Toba?

The right base depends on which part of the region matters most to you. Ise, Toba and Kashikojima are connected by rail, but they are separate sightseeing areas. Our recommendation is to use Hojoen for the coastal night, with the shrine visit on the way in or out.

BaseChoose it forThe trade-off
Kashikojima, including HojoenAn Ago Bay ryokan stay, bathing and a cruise near the stationAllow a separate journey to Ise Jingu or Toba.

TobaToba Aquarium, Mikimoto Pearl Island and a waterfront stopHojoen and the Ago Bay cruise are farther along the railway in Shima.

These are location-based choices, rather than a ranking of hotels we have stayed in. If you only have one day from Nagoya or Kansai, concentrate on Ise. Add the coastal night when you can give the inn and Ago Bay their own time.

Things to do near Kashikojima Hojoen

Hojoen works as the coastal overnight stop in a wider two-day Ise-Shima itinerary. Plan Ise Jingu and the streets around Naiku during the first day, then travel onward to Kashikojima with time for the inn. The following day can be for the bay before continuing your journey.

Uji Bridge at Ise Jingu, with wooden railings and a torii beneath a clear sky
Ise Jingu provides the cultural half of the journey; allow separate travel time onward to Kashikojima.

Ago Bay cruise: the simplest outing from Kashikojima

The Kashikojima Espana Cruise departs about two minutes on foot from Kashikojima Station and takes approximately 50 minutes. It is the simplest coastal addition after breakfast and checkout: return to the station area, take the cruise and continue by train. Check the day's sailings and agree on luggage storage before going; weather can affect operations.

Yokoyama Observatory: the panorama of Ago Bay

For the view across the islands and inlets, take Kintetsu to Ugata, then a taxi to Yokoyama Observatory. Confirm both the drop-off point and how you will arrange the return ride. The official visitor centre covers the viewpoint; our regional guide explains the seasonal taxi scheme and its conditions. Make this the clear-weather choice, and allow time for taxi availability rather than treating it as a quick walk from Hojoen.

Ise Jingu and Okage Yokocho: a separate shrine day

Visit the shrines on your arrival or departure day. Geku, near Iseshi Station, and Naiku are separate sites; Oharaimachi and Okage Yokocho adjoin the Naiku side of the visit. This is a full part of the itinerary, with walking, food stops and transport between places. If you visit before checking in, work back from dinner and your train or reserved Pearl Shuttle.

Toba: add a half-day for one main attraction

Toba is a practical optional stop along the railway toward Ise. Mikimoto Pearl Island is about five minutes on foot from Toba Station; Toba Aquarium is about ten minutes. Choose the pearl island for the region's pearl-cultivation story, or consider the aquarium for an indoor outing. Give either its own half-day instead of squeezing both into the morning you leave Hojoen.

For two days and one night, combine the Ise shrine day with one main bay activity. Three days and two nights give you more room for Yokoyama, the cruise and Toba while still enjoying the hotel.

Booking Kashikojima Hojoen

Start with the official hotel website and its linked official reservation service. Compare that offer with the booking platforms below using the same guest details, dates, room type and meal plan.

Before confirming, check the room's beds or tatami layout, the meal venue, what the child's booking includes, and the cancellation conditions. If the dinner menu is the deciding factor, ask about the exact plan rather than relying on a promotional photograph. Our 2023 coupon and price are a past example and do not indicate an offer available now.

Questions before you book: English enquiries

Send questions in English through the hotel's official inquiry form before booking or arrival. The hotel confirmed directly to JAPANODE on October 14, 2026 that it accepts English enquiries through this form. Staff fluent in spoken English are not always on duty, so raise important questions about meals, tattoo covers or your family's needs in advance.
