Forgot travel insurance for Japan? You may still have time. Some insurers accept purchases shortly before departure, including on the day of travel. Start with where you live and whether your journey has already begun, then check when the cover you need would actually start.
If you are still preparing to leave, check a quote for your residence. If you are already travelling, use the after-departure options. If you have a policy through a card, employer or annual plan, check that before paying for another one.

Leaving today or tomorrow? Find your next step
You do not need to read a full provider ranking to take the first step. Use the row that matches your situation, then review the conditions beside the quote button.
| Where you are now | Your next step | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving tomorrow; journey has not started | Compare a pre-departure quote | Purchase cutoff, effective time and cancellation availability |
| Leaving today; journey has not started | Check same-day options | Whether this product accepts today's departure and which benefits remain |
| On the way to the airport or already there | Check what counts as departure | Your journey may already have begun under the policy |
| Already travelling or in Japan | Use the already-travelling route | Eligibility, start time, waiting periods and evidence requirements |
| Already ill, injured or facing a cancelled flight | Deal with the existing problem first | New insurance does not reach back to an existing loss |
Check the effective date and time, including the timezone, before relying on a new policy. Medical cover, cancellation and other benefits can have different start rules. A payment confirmation alone does not answer all of them.
Check a quote before you leave
Use your actual residence, every traveller's age, full journey dates and first booking date. Select Japan and any other destinations the insurer asks for. Do not change your residence or mark an already-started trip as a future trip to make the form accept it.
US residents: check Faye's available benefits
Faye is one option to check for an eligible US resident whose trip has not started. Its official FAQ says purchases are accepted before departure, but not during travel, and that departure-day quotes do not include trip cancellation.
Its purchase-timing guide also describes a cancellation restriction within 48 hours of departure. If you leave today or tomorrow, do not assume cancellation is included. Confirm the benefits offered for your state and dates. If you have already left home, check the trip-start definition with Faye before proceeding.

For alternatives, the US-resident comparison explains how to compare state-specific plans using the same inputs. Its historical example prices are not today's quotes.
Non-US residents: check Heymondo International eligibility
For an eligible non-US resident with fixed dates, Heymondo International is another quote to check. Availability depends on your residence and the product offered. Its International overview lists an age limit of 69 for trips up to 29 days and 49 for trips of 30 days or longer.
Cancellation has a separate deadline: that overview requires purchase within seven days of the first trip booking for cancellation protection. Buying medical cover close to departure does not automatically protect your prepaid bookings. Check your current start date, selected benefits and issued terms before paying.

Use your actual residence, age and full itinerary. Confirm that the offered policy accepts your departure date and starts when you need it. Cancellation eligibility has a separate purchase deadline.

Age and trip-length limits apply. Do not assume cancellation protection or an immediate start.
If this product does not fit, compare insurers available in your residence country using the main Japan insurance guide. A quote that rejects your dates or age is a reason to choose an appropriate alternative, not to alter your details.
Can you buy insurance the day before departure?
Often there are still products to check, but the last purchase date is provider-specific. For example, Generali Global Assistance's US guidance permits purchases through the day before departure and excludes departure-day purchases. Its cancellation protection starts after purchase under its stated timing rules.
That example shows why a general statement such as “you can always buy until boarding” is unreliable. Another provider may accept a later purchase but offer a different set of benefits. Compare the result for your real dates rather than relying on a provider's name alone.
Have your itinerary ready before requesting quotes. Include the journey from home and any stopovers, not just the days booked in a Japanese hotel. If you leave your residence country on Monday and land in Japan on Tuesday, ask the insurer how the outbound journey is included. Selecting Tuesday simply because it is your Japanese arrival date could leave part of the journey outside the dates you intended to insure.
Once you find an eligible quote, look at what it covers during the remaining time before departure. A policy can still be useful for covered medical events during the trip even when a cancellation benefit is no longer available. Whether that fills your needs is a separate decision from whether the checkout accepts your payment.
What changes when you leave today?
On departure day, focus on three questions: Can I buy this product now? When does it become effective? Which benefits are included? A “yes” to the first does not settle the other two.
Allianz's US explanation of late purchases distinguishes tomorrow's departure from today's and describes a narrower selection for same-day travel. Its examples apply to that US product range; they are not rules for every Allianz policy sold worldwide.
Do not expect a last-minute medical policy to behave like comprehensive protection purchased when you booked. Emergency treatment, evacuation, baggage, travel delay, cancellation and interruption each have their own definitions and conditions. A large medical limit tells you little about whether a missed connection or an unused hotel night qualifies.
Keep an eye on the time shown on the certificate, especially around midnight or when travelling across timezones. If the paperwork uses a different date or timezone from your phone, ask the insurer what that means for the hours before your flight. Save the answer with your documents if it affects your decision.
At the airport: has your trip already started?
Being inside your home country does not necessarily mean you are still “before departure.” Depending on the wording, the journey can begin when you leave home or start the insured trip, rather than when the aircraft takes off.
Tell the insurer plainly: “I left home at this time, I am now at this location, and my flight departs at this time. Can I buy this policy for the journey already in progress, and when would each benefit start?” This is more useful than asking only whether same-day insurance is sold.
Public summaries can use “departure” in different ways. If the answer is unclear, use the insurer's support route and the actual plan wording. Do not infer eligibility from a checkout that lets you select today's date, or from another traveller's experience in a different country.
For an itinerary that has already started, use the section below. If the provider does accept your circumstances, check the remaining itinerary and effective time just as carefully as you would before leaving home.
Already travelling or in Japan?
Use the insurance-after-departure guide. It separates the products and market-specific start rules that matter after a journey begins, instead of sending you through a pre-departure quote.
SafetyWing's current Essential eligibility guidance permits eligible travellers to buy after leaving their home country. Its waiting-period guidance distinguishes an overall waiting period from additional evidence for early claims and waits applying to particular benefits. That is why “available after departure” should never be shortened to “everything covered instantly.”
If an existing policy is still running, ask about an extension before it expires. A new policy from another insurer can introduce different exclusions or start rules; it is not automatically a continuation of the old one. For a trip lasting months or with no firm return date, also check the long-stay guide.
If something has already happened
Do not delay care to shop for insurance. If you are ill or injured, use our guide to finding medical help in Japan. Contact any existing insurer about assistance and claims. A newly purchased policy cannot retrospectively insure a bill already incurred.
Similarly, if an airline has already cancelled your flight, start with the airline's rebooking or refund process and any cover you already hold. A new purchase should not be treated as a way to recover that known loss. Our cancellation guide separates supplier refunds from insurance claims.
Existing symptoms, previous treatment and foreseeable events need careful answers in an application. A later diagnosis does not necessarily make earlier symptoms a new event. If you are considering cover for the rest of the trip, describe your circumstances accurately and check what is excluded; do not assume a future, unrelated problem is automatically insured.
Save this checklist before paying
Use this as a final pass through the quote, rather than a reason to start your research again. If one line is unclear, ask about that specific point.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Who is insured | Actual residence or state, names, ages and any dependent rules |
| Journey dates | Full trip start and end, stopovers and onward destinations |
| Current status | Whether the policy accepts where you are and how far the journey has progressed |
| Start of protection | Effective date, time, timezone and benefit-specific waiting rules |
| Benefits still available | Medical and evacuation terms; cancellation, interruption and delay separately |
| Existing cover | Any card, employer, health or annual policy that already meets part of the need |
| Activities and conditions | Relevant medical answers, skiing or other activities, and exclusions |
| Payment and documents | Total premium, deductible, certificate, full wording and assistance contact |
For a family, use the traveller-by-traveller checklist rather than assuming one adult's policy includes everyone. If some relatives have different residences or travel dates, ask whether they need separate policies. For an older traveller, check age together with trip duration before comparing prices; a provider suitable for a younger companion may not be available to both.
Keep the confirmation email, certificate and assistance details accessible offline. Share them with a travelling companion or someone at home. If you need treatment in Japan, ask the insurer and facility about payment arrangements: JNTO's insurance guidance explains the importance of suitable cover and assistance, and direct billing should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Finish the check, then finish packing
If you still need cover and your journey has not started, return to the residence-specific quote options. Check the available benefits, save the documents and add the assistance contact to your phone. If you already have suitable cover, keep those details handy instead of buying a duplicate policy.
Then complete your Visit Japan Web arrival checks. Travel insurance and Visit Japan Web are separate preparations: an insurance purchase is not required to use the service.
For your next trip, review insurance when you make the first booking. Some benefits depend on that date, and buying earlier can give you a longer period of pre-departure protection. This guide helps when the reminder comes late; it is not a reason to wait deliberately.
How we checked this guide
We compared the official provider pages linked above on October 26, 2026, distinguishing residence, product and purchase timing. We have not presented a test purchase, personal claim or invented quote. Where public summaries do not establish the same rule, we identify what needs checking in the actual policy rather than combine them into a universal promise.
The cover image is illustrative and reused from JAPANODE's travel-planning imagery; it is not evidence of an insurance purchase. Our editorial policy explains how we handle sources and corrections.

Some insurers accept purchases the day before a trip. Check your residence, whether your journey has started, the policy's effective time and which benefits are still available. A last-minute purchase does not automatically include cancellation protection.
Some policies allow same-day purchases before the trip starts, but not all insurers do. Being able to pay today does not mean every benefit starts immediately. Confirm the exact product, eligibility and start time before relying on it.
Possibly, but boarding time is not the only test. A policy may treat the journey as having started before the flight. Tell the insurer where you are and when you left, and confirm whether it accepts your actual circumstances.
Not necessarily. Cancellation benefits can have purchase deadlines linked to the first booking or departure. Medical, cancellation and interruption benefits have different purposes. Read the quote and policy for the benefits still available to you.
Do not expect a new policy to reimburse an existing loss or known disruption. Existing symptoms and medical conditions require separate eligibility and exclusion checks. Seek medical help first if needed, and contact any existing insurer about existing cover.
Use an already-travelling insurance route. Some providers accept eligible travellers after departure, but residence, age, destination, start times and exclusions still apply. A new policy cannot retroactively insure an expense already incurred.
