10 exceptional hotels & ryokans
Extraordinary
stays in Japan.
A quiet garden. Your own onsen.
A room you will remember long after the trip.
Lake Kawaguchi region · landscape photograph, not a hotel-room view
The place becomes the plan
Some stays become
the journey.
There are hotels you choose for the address. And there are places you build a day, an anniversary, or a whole detour around.
This is a collection of ten extraordinary Japanese stays, from a ryokan in central Tokyo to a private onsen in Hokkaido and a night beside art on Naoshima. Each offers a different reason to go. The right room—and enough time to enjoy it—makes the difference.
An editorial selection by JAPANODE, based on official property information checked in October 2026. This is not a ranking or a claim of personal stays at all ten properties.

A ryokan above the city
Otemachi · Tokyo
HOSHINOYA Tokyo
A ryokan above the city
- Why stay here
- A Japanese ryokan experience within a Tokyo stay.
- Which room to book
- Choose by sleeping arrangement and space. The hotel's onsen is a shared bathing facility, not a private bath in every room.
- Good to know
- A ryokan rhythm in a city setting. Check meal inclusions separately from the room rate.

Picture your stay
Tokyo can fill every hour of a visit. HOSHINOYA Tokyo offers a reason to leave some of those hours empty. In Otemachi, its ryokan approach brings tatami, restrained interiors and a more domestic scale into the middle of the capital. The shared lounge on each guest floor is part of that idea: the building may be tall, but the experience is organised into smaller spaces.
This is our choice for someone who wants Japanese hospitality to be part of the Tokyo stay itself, rather than saving it exclusively for a countryside detour. It makes particular sense as a pause between energetic days in the city. Give yourself an afternoon to return early, change pace and use the hotel's bathing facilities.
The distinction to understand is the bath. The hotel's onsen is a shared facility; booking a room here is not the same as booking a private hot-spring bath. If bathing privately together is the main reason for your celebration, look more closely at FUFU Kawaguchiko or Zaborin before deciding. For a broader city shortlist, see our Tokyo honeymoon hotel guide.

A garden wrapped in mist
Bunkyo · Tokyo
Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo
A garden wrapped in mist
- Why stay here
- Garden walks and a slower Tokyo interlude.
- Which room to book
- Start with a Garden View category if the greenery is your reason to stay. City View rooms offer a different outlook.
- Good to know
- The Tokyo Sea of Clouds is a scheduled mist installation. Spa access depends on the room package.

Picture your stay
Choose Chinzanso for a different version of Tokyo: a hotel day organised around a garden, with the city becoming the backdrop. Its landscape and traditional garden structures give the stay a visual identity that a skyline photograph alone cannot provide. The Tokyo Sea of Clouds adds another layer, sending artificial mist across the garden at scheduled times.
The attraction is not simply seeing the mist once. It is having the time to walk through the garden, return in another light, and make the grounds part of the stay. That suits a couple celebrating an occasion, or travellers who would rather spend their special-hotel budget on a place they will actually use during the day.
Book a Garden View room if the outlook is central to that plan. A City View room can still give access to the hotel's setting, but it is a different proposition when you open the curtains. Also compare spa inclusions separately: the room name alone does not tell you what the package covers. Choose this hotel for its garden character rather than assuming every Tokyo luxury hotel offers an interchangeable experience.

Make time for the ryokan
Hakone · Kanagawa
Gora Kadan
Make time for the ryokan
- Why stay here
- A special ryokan stay built around bathing and dinner.
- Which room to book
- Select an explicitly named Room with Open-air Bath or a suite with the facilities you want. Standard rooms are a separate category.
- Good to know
- This is Gora Kadan in Hakone, not Gora Kadan Fuji. Confirm meals and arrival arrangements for your rate.
Check rooms & rates at Gora Kadan
Use the same dates, guests and room category on each site. Compare meals, cancellation terms and the final total before choosing.
Picture your stay
At Gora Kadan in Hakone, the room decision deserves as much care as the destination decision. The official accommodation guide separates standard rooms from rooms with open-air baths and several suite categories. The photograph that first makes you want to stay may belong to one very particular room.
For the stay imagined here, choose a category with the open-air bath you want, then build the day around the ryokan. Leave room for bathing, a relaxed dinner and a morning without an immediate dash for a train. A ryokan night becomes less convincing as a special occasion if the schedule treats it only as an expensive place to sleep.
Gora Kadan is our Hakone pick for travellers who want the traditions of a ryokan to carry the experience. Confirm which meals are included, how dinner is arranged and when you need to arrive. If this is your first ryokan stay, our guide to Japanese accommodation types explains how that rhythm differs from an ordinary hotel. Be careful with the property name while comparing rates: this entry is Gora Kadan in Hakone, not Gora Kadan Fuji.

Fuji, forest, and your own bath
Lake Kawaguchi · Yamanashi
FUFU Kawaguchiko
Fuji, forest, and your own bath
- Why stay here
- A private-onsen celebration with Mount Fuji as the backdrop.
- Which room to book
- Compare the floor and outlook, not only the suite name. The official guide distinguishes forest-level rooms from higher lake-and-mountain views.
- Good to know
- Mount Fuji can disappear behind cloud. Choose a room you would enjoy even on a low-visibility day.

Picture your stay
The appeal here is easy to picture: a private hot-spring bath, a wooded setting and Mount Fuji beyond. FUFU Kawaguchiko makes a strong choice for a trip where the room itself is meant to be one of the highlights. Its suites are built around private bathing, while the different floors and outlooks offer noticeably different ways to experience the landscape.
Our advice is to decide what matters before comparing suite names. Do you want a closer relationship with the forest, or a higher outlook towards the lake and mountain? Read the property's description of that exact category, then match it to the listing you book. A general hotel photograph is not a promise of the view from your room.
Fuji remains weather-dependent. Choose a suite whose bath, interior and sense of privacy would still feel worthwhile with the mountain hidden. That is a better basis for a celebration than a single hoped-for photograph. If you are weighing a short excursion against a full overnight stay, our Mount Fuji planning guide provides the wider travel context; this hotel is a reason to give the area more time.

An unhurried lakeside retreat
Lake Chuzenji · Tochigi
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko
An unhurried lakeside retreat
- Why stay here
- Lake views, mountain air and time in the onsen.
- Which room to book
- Choose an explicitly described lake-view category for Lake Chuzenji. Other categories face the mountain or garden.
- Good to know
- The hotel is in Oku-Nikko, up by the lake. Allow for the onward journey from Nikko's stations and shrine district.

Picture your stay
Lake Chuzenji gives this stay its centre of gravity. The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko combines a lakeside location with interiors that use an engawa-style sitting area to draw attention back to the outlook. It is a hotel to consider when your ideal indulgence involves a comfortable place to sit, mountain scenery and time in the onsen.
The important geographical detail is that this is Oku-Nikko, up by the lake, rather than a hotel beside Nikko's railway stations. Make the journey part of the plan instead of assuming the room is a quick walk from a shrine visit. An ambitious sightseeing day followed by a late arrival would use very little of what makes the stay distinctive.
Choose the named view category deliberately. A lake view, mountain outlook and garden-facing room should not be treated as equivalent simply because the furnishings look similar. Likewise, keep the hotel's shared onsen separate from the description of an in-room bath. For an autumn visit, use our Nikko autumn guide to decide how much sightseeing to combine with a slower lakeside stay.

Stay inside Kyoto's scenery
Higashiyama · Kyoto
Park Hyatt Kyoto
Stay inside Kyoto's scenery
- Why stay here
- Higashiyama atmosphere and an outlook worth choosing carefully.
- Which room to book
- If Yasaka Pagoda is the view you want, compare Pagoda View categories. Hill View and Garden View rooms are different choices.
- Good to know
- The hotel does not promise the same outlook from every room. Even rooms in the same category can differ in layout and view.

Picture your stay
Park Hyatt Kyoto is the choice here for making the setting of Higashiyama part of the hotel experience. Rather than treating Kyoto's streets and the place you sleep as separate worlds, the appeal is their proximity: stepping out into the district, then returning to a room chosen for its own sense of place.
That last detail matters. If your imagined stay includes Yasaka Pagoda in the view, look at the specifically named Pagoda View categories. Hill View and Garden View rooms have their own descriptions, and the hotel notes that layouts and outlooks can vary even within a category. A striking photograph of the city does not describe every room.
We would choose this over a garden retreat when the surrounding cityscape is the main reason for the splurge. Keep enough unscheduled time to enjoy the hotel and its setting; a room upgrade has limited value if you are away from breakfast until bedtime. If you are still deciding which part of the city suits your wider itinerary, start with our Kyoto neighbourhood guide, then return to the room-level choice.

A Kyoto day by the pond
Higashiyama · Kyoto
Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto
A Kyoto day by the pond
- Why stay here
- A garden-focused stay with space for doing very little.
- Which room to book
- Premier Heritage Garden Rooms overlook Shakusui-en and measure 52–53 m². Check the exact category when comparing booking sites.
- Good to know
- A photograph of the pond does not mean every room looks onto it. Meals and spa treatments depend on your chosen plan.

Picture your stay
Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto offers another answer to the special Kyoto stay: make the pond garden the heart of a day. Shakusui-en gives the hotel a setting with a history of its own, while the experience can be as much about spending time on the property as exploring outside it.
This is the Kyoto choice we would prioritise for travellers who want to schedule a pause. Leave a morning open, plan a meal without fitting it between distant sights, and allow the hotel to earn its place in the itinerary. There is no need to pretend that every luxury stay must also be the most efficient sightseeing base.
For a room overlooking Shakusui-en, compare the Premier Heritage Garden category rather than relying on the hotel's general gallery. The official description gives these rooms an area of 52–53 square metres; capacity and bedding still need to match your actual party. Between this hotel and Park Hyatt Kyoto, we would make the first decision by experience: pond-garden retreat or Higashiyama setting. Then compare the particular room and cancellation terms, not just the hotel brands.

A pond, a stage, a quieter Japan
Shuzenji · Izu
Asaba
A pond, a stage, a quieter Japan
- Why stay here
- A traditional ryokan stay with a strong cultural setting.
- Which room to book
- Look closely at the individual room description: outlook, bedding and bathing arrangements matter more than a generic suite label.
- Good to know
- Performances on the Noh stage are occasional, not a nightly inclusion. Confirm dates and admission arrangements separately.
Check rooms & rates at Asaba
Use the same dates, guests and room category on each site. Compare meals, cancellation terms and the final total before choosing.
Picture your stay
Asaba in Shuzenji belongs in this collection for the way its setting connects a ryokan stay with Japanese cultural tradition. The pond and Noh stage give it a character that is difficult to reduce to a list of facilities. It is a strong choice for travellers who are interested in the atmosphere and form of a traditional inn, rather than choosing only by the largest room or longest amenities list.
The temptation is to imagine an entire evening from one beautiful photograph. Resist that when booking. Performances are occasional, so a stage in the grounds does not mean a performance is included on the night you stay. If an event is the reason for travelling, confirm its date and the arrangements before committing to the room.
Otherwise, let the ryokan itself be the occasion. Compare the individual rooms carefully, including their outlook, bedding and bathing arrangements. A special stay can depend on those details more than on a generic “suite” label. Asaba is our choice for a culturally focused pause in Izu, particularly when you are prepared to give dinner and the slower rhythm of the inn priority over another busy sightseeing evening.

Disappear into the woods
Niseko area · Hokkaido
Zaborin
Disappear into the woods
- Why stay here
- Privacy, forest scenery and a food-focused Hokkaido escape.
- Which room to book
- Each villa has its own indoor hot-spring bath and covered open-air bath. Compare the room layout and sleeping arrangement next.
- Good to know
- Choose it for time at the ryokan. This secluded stay needs different planning from a hotel in the centre of a ski village.
Check rooms & rates at Zaborin
Use the same dates, guests and room category on each site. Compare meals, cancellation terms and the final total before choosing.

Picture your stay
Zaborin shifts the collection north, into a Hokkaido retreat where privacy and the surrounding woods are central to the stay. Each villa has both an indoor hot-spring bath and a covered open-air one. That makes the bathing arrangements unusually straightforward to understand before moving on to the finer choice of room layout and sleeping setup.
Its kita-kaiseki dining gives food an important role alongside the baths and landscape. Plan the stay as time at the ryokan, with the journey and any activities organised around it. This is a different travel decision from choosing accommodation primarily for convenience in a busy ski village.
For couples whose idea of an exceptional hotel is somewhere to withdraw for a while, this is one of the strongest fits in the collection. The practical side deserves equal attention: confirm transfers, dining requirements and the arrangements for your party before booking. Those details are particularly important when the appeal is a secluded location. Choose the season for the atmosphere you want, while remembering that a photograph of deep snow or green woodland represents one moment, not a year-round guarantee.

Let art set the pace
Naoshima · Seto Inland Sea
Benesse House
Let art set the pace
- Why stay here
- An art-and-architecture journey with a night on Naoshima.
- Which room to book
- Choose the wing before the room: Museum, Oval, Park and Beach offer different stays. Verify the wing shown by the booking channel.
- Good to know
- Oval access is limited to Oval guests. Museum calendars, ferry connections and restaurant reservations need separate planning.
Check rooms & rates at Benesse House
Use the same dates, guests and room category on each site. Compare meals, cancellation terms and the final total before choosing.
Picture your stay
Benesse House is here because an extraordinary stay does not have to be defined by an enormous suite or a private bath. On Naoshima, the relationship between contemporary art, Tadao Ando's architecture and the Seto Inland Sea is the reason to stay. A night on the island allows the hotel to become part of the art journey rather than simply somewhere to recover after it.
The first booking decision is the building. Museum, Oval, Park and Beach are distinct wings, and their names should be treated as essential room information. In particular, the frequently photographed Oval is not a space every Benesse House guest can assume they may enter; access is limited to guests staying in that wing.
Choose the wing you actually want, then check whether your booking channel offers it. After that, work through ferry connections, museum calendars, any timed admissions and restaurant plans. The room reservation does not organise the rest of the island for you. For an art-focused traveller, that preparation is worthwhile: this is the collection's clearest example of selecting a hotel because of the journey you want to have around it.
A considered journey
Book the experience.
Read the details.
How to make one extraordinary stay count
Treat this as a shortlist, not an itinerary to complete. For most trips, one carefully chosen stay will have more impact than moving through a succession of expensive hotels without time to enjoy them. Start with the experience you would most regret missing, then see where it fits naturally into the route.
Choose the experience before the room price
For private bathing, start with FUFU Kawaguchiko, Zaborin or the explicitly described bath-equipped categories at Gora Kadan. For garden time, compare Chinzanso and Four Seasons Kyoto. For art and traditional culture, consider Benesse House and Asaba. These are different reasons to travel, so the most useful comparison is not simply which hotel costs less.
Our luxury Japan itinerary can help with the route around the stay. Keep hotel time visible in that plan, especially on arrival and departure days. A single ryokan night can work if the transfers leave space for dinner and a relaxed morning; a remote destination may justify a longer pause.
Compare the same booking, not two headline rates
Before deciding between booking sites, match the room category, view, bedding, number and ages of guests, meals and cancellation deadline. Also check whether the bath pictured is private, shared, hot-spring water or a conventional soaking tub. Similar-looking photographs and translated room names can hide different products.
A room photograph is an example of a category, not a guarantee of the exact layout. Food changes with the season and the dining plan. Spa treatments, facility access and special events can be separate charges. Confirm the important details in the rate description and ask the property when something remains unclear.
Leave room for an imperfect day
Mount Fuji may be hidden, a lake may be grey, or rain may shorten a garden walk. Choose a hotel whose interior, bathing or dining experience still appeals under those conditions. The question is not whether the stay can reproduce one photograph, but whether you would enjoy being there for the time you have set aside.
Finally, understand the cancellation terms before committing to a substantial advance payment. Our guide to travel insurance in Japan explains issues to check when comparing cover; insurance is not a promise that any change of mind will be reimbursed.
The practical details
Before you decide.
Which of these Japanese hotels have a private onsen?
FUFU Kawaguchiko describes private hot-spring baths in its suites, and Zaborin provides indoor and covered open-air hot-spring baths in each villa. At Gora Kadan in Hakone, select a room or suite explicitly described as having the bath you want. Do not assume a hotel onsen means every guest room has one.
Is a luxury ryokan worth a one-night stay?
One night can work if you arrive with time for bathing and dinner, then leave after an unhurried morning. Check the property's check-in and dining arrangements before booking transport. Two nights can give a remote stay more breathing room, but this collection is not a ten-stop itinerary.
Does every room at FUFU Kawaguchiko have the same Mount Fuji view?
No. Compare floor, room category and the description of the outlook. Forest-level and higher-floor views differ, and weather can obscure Mount Fuji. Choose the room for its whole experience rather than a guaranteed mountain photograph.
Which Kyoto hotel should I choose: Park Hyatt or Four Seasons?
Choose Park Hyatt Kyoto when the Higashiyama setting and a carefully selected outlook are central to your stay. Choose Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto when you want a quieter day around the pond garden and hotel facilities. At either hotel, book the named view category you actually want.
Can I book every Benesse House wing on the same website?
Do not assume so. Museum, Oval, Park and Beach are distinct wings, and booking channels may offer different inventory. Confirm the wing in the room description. Access to Oval is limited to guests staying there.
Are the meals and rooms shown in photographs included in every booking?
No. Photographs illustrate a property and may show a specific room category, seasonal meal or separately charged facility. Confirm the room, view, bath type, meals, guest count and inclusions on the exact plan before paying.
